“The Poetry Project has helped me feel like I belong somewhere, and I don’t have to scramble to find a place in NYC to be a poet.”

Friends of The Poetry Project,

Each year, The Poetry Project offers a large and diverse group of poets with the opportunity to bring their work to a national stage. This year we had the pleasure of offering fellowships to several emerging poets as part of a new program, Emerge-Surface-Be. The above quote is what fellow Krystal Languell shared about her experience.

As we approach the end of the year, we hope you will support The Poetry Project’s mission to continue to foster the reading and writing of contemporary poetry by making a tax deductible contribution. Your gift makes it possible for us to bring over 160 poets to perform at the Project each year. A donation of $1,000 can cover basic expenses for the 6 poets we typically host in 1 week. A donation of $5,000 can help pay the gifted poets who lead our workshop program. Of course, a donation of any amount has an impact.

We believe that performing one’s poetry is vital to our culture, an action that has the power to transform both the performer and you, the audience. Creating time, space, and payment for poets to do this work is at the heart of The Poetry Project’s existence.

As a token of our thanks, we’ll send you a lovely letter-pressed card that juxtaposes a quote from Leslie Scalapino with a quote from Daito Kokushi. This special edition card was designed by Edwin Torres and printed by Rich O’Russa at Center for Book Arts. In addition, we have a special offer for current Project members: you can renew your annual membership now, and we won’t trouble you next year when your current membership expires; we’ll simply add your additional year at that time.

I hope that you will be able to join us for some of our upcoming events, and I wish you all the best in 2014.

Sincerely,

Stacy Szymaszek
Director of The Poetry Project
